NHL: Weekend storylines
The 2012 draft has come and gone and, while it wasn’t a blockbuster, there was still plenty to get stuck into, so here’s a round-up of some of the biggest storylines of the weekend.
The Edmonton Oilers are used to having the first NHL picks, and this was the third straight year that they had picked at No 1.
Speculation was rife this year as to who they were going to choose and some thought that they would go with the top defenceman in the draft, Ryan Murray.
In the end they went with Nail Yakupov, who is possibly the last piece in the young, exciting and explosive offence that the Oilers have out together, although the fact remains that they need to address their rather limited defensive core.
The Malcolm Subban story is an interesting one. He’s rated by many as the best young goaltenders around and the Boston Bruins were lucky to grab him up with the 24th pick overall. He can push Tuukka Rask as he fills the void for Tim Thomas.
But that’s not the real story as Subban’s brother P. K. Subban has been making a name for himself at the Canadiens, and, as we all know, the Bruins and the Canadiens have one of the most heated rivalries in the entire NHL.
It will be great to see the brother’s lace up the skates against each other over the next few years and, if we’re lucky, we might even see a Subban vs. Subban shootout one day.
Rick Nash and Roberto Luongo are still in the same place. Should we be surprised? No, but it would be a godsend if one of these guys would move, then we could all stop contemplating “what if” scenarios and gain a definitive answer.
But those who bet on hockey are still waiting, and will continue to wait.
We would be shocked if one of both of these two wasn’t moved on before next season starts but we’ll just have to be patient.
